Evidence? First, Murdoch’s mum. Rupert (76) flew out to Melbourne for her 99th birthday last week. Her secret? “We all do better when we are a bit switched on.” Well okay, she’s not a journalist but it’s definitely in the family.

Second, Rose Hacker. We believe she was the world’s oldest columnist when she died last week at 101. She wrote fortnightly in the Camden New Journal.

She had her first column published at the age of 100.
